Beaches & Ports
Sandcastles, ice creams or fish and chips by the sea
Devon and Cornwall have some of the best beaches and ports around the whole of the UK. Many of these are easily accessible from Frankabrough Farm. We’ve chosen some of our favourites from around the area.

Bigbury
Bigbury beach is an ideal beach for the for family. A sandy beach with shallow waters, and dotted with rock pools. There’s a wide selection of water sports available bodyboarding, surfing, windsurfing and kite-surfing are popular here. In addition Bigbury’s most famous landmark Burgh Island overlooks the beach itself. The island is accessible at low tide via a causeway and when the tide is in you can reach the island by the unique ‘sea tractor’. Bigbury beach has good facilities including a café that specialises in selling organic and local food.
Looe
Looe – Looe – A busy fishing port, with a popular family beach, The town centre has a large car park and is great for wandering around the many shops and fishing port. why not try your hand a fishing for crabs with a line and bucket or take one of the many boats trips. http://www.looeguide.co.uk
Wembury
The National Trust beach at Wembury has fantastic rocks pools, wildlife and a distinctive island called the Great Mewstone. An ideal place for coastal walks, beach combing or just relaxing at the Old Mill Cafe. – http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/wembury
Mevagissey
A traditional cornish fishing village with fascinating gifts shops and art galleries. http://www.mevagissey.net
Widemouth
A long open bay with excellent sandy beach. It is ideal for families for swimming, sunbathing, surfing or exploring the inlets and coves.
Dartmouth
Dartmouth – A fantastic fishing port and bustling town with shops, art galleries as well as gourmet restaurants and cosy cafes. It is also home to one of the most beautifully located fortresses in England and not to mention a number of great local beaches. http://www.discoverdartmouth.com
Bude
Named as the 2015 Best UK coastal resort, Bude has a lot to offers, rambling, riding, surfers, secluded golf courses and brilliant sea and coarse fishing. http://www.visitbude.info
Polzeth
A superb beach and village which is renowned as one of the worlds best surfing destinations. http://www.polzeath.co.uk
Trebarwith Strands
A wonderful all round beach just a mile and a half from Tintagel. Vast cliffs, dark caves, fine golden sand make an excellent area to explore.
Seaton, Cornwall
A small sea side village situated on the south Cornish coast. Always a great day out.

Launceston Castle
Set within the nearby town of Launceston, the Castle dominates the surrounding landscape. Built soon after the Norman Conquest, features an unusual keep consisting of a 13th-century round tower built by Richard, Earl of Cornwall, inside an earlier circular shell-keep. The tower top can be reached via an internal staircase but once reached, offers breathtaking views of the historic town and countryside. You can explore the long history of the castle in a display which traces 1,000 years, with finds from site excavations. The castle grounds are ideal for relaxing and picnicking while you enjoy the great views of the surrounding valley. http://www.english-heritage.org.uk/visit/places/launceston-castle/
Okehampton Castle
The remains of the largest castle in Devon. Built soon after the Norman Conquest as a motte and bailey castle with a stone keep, it was converted into a sumptuous residence in the 14th century by Hugh Courtenay, Earl of Devon, much of whose work survives.
Restormell Castle
The great 13th-century circular shell-keep stands on an earlier Norman mound surrounded by a deep dry ditch, atop a high spur beside the River Fowey. Twice visited by the Black Prince, it finally saw action during the Civil War in 1644. Tintagel Castle

Lydford Castle
This nearby castle in the beautiful village of Lydford was originally built as a prison and later became notorious for harsh punishments, with one of its inmates calling it ‘the most annoious, contagious and detestable place within this realm’. http://www.english-heritage.org.uk/visit/places/lydford-castle-and-saxon-town/
Powderham Castle
Six hundred years of history are contained within the walls of one of England’s oldest family homes jest near Exeter. Built by Sir Philip Courtenay in 1391 it has stayed in the same family to this day, currently home to the 18th Earl & Countess of Devon. http://www.powderham.co.uk
Royal Citadel

This 15th Century Royal Inn is located on the Tamar Trail just a 10 minute walk from Beera Farm. The Inn was once a nunnery and stands near the ancient Horsebridge, which was built over the River Tamar in 1437 by French Benedictine monks. Charles I is reputed to have visited the pub during the civil war & left his seal in the granite step ‘for services rendered’. A selection of real ales, wines, spirits and non-alcoholic drinks are served.
